'Brak Water, Zilt Land. Zoutbelasting of de prijs van het inpolderen.'

As part of the Stellingname project Dempsey&Boer created a water library. Resident at the Kunstfort (Vijfhuizen), a contemporary arts centre in the middle of the Haarlemmermeerpolder, they found complex water systems all around. The polder has an average depth of six meters below sea level with pumping stations working day and night to keep it dry. Salt water seeps to the surface through the clay, to avoid the soil becoming “polluted” with salt, 20/40 million m3 of fresh water is flushed round the polder every year. This system will soon become unsustainable. To make visible the problem Dempsey&Boer made a soil and water library of samples taken from 24 locations on the Haarlemmermeerpolder. Each sample has a unique colour and is dated and labelled with location, elevation, salinity and iron content.

The project Stellingname has been curated by Jacqueline Heerema of Satellietgroep
